Protect yourself and your children from RSV
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms. Every year about 58,000-80,000 children younger than five years old are hospitalized in the United States due to RSV infection. RSV is the most common cause of bronchiolitis and pneumonia in children younger than one year of age. People infected with RSV usually show symptoms within 4 to 6 days after getting infected. Symptoms of RSV infection include runny nose, coughing, sneezing, wheezing, decreased appetite, and fever. Avoid close contact with sick people, wash your hands often, clean and disinfect surfaces, cover your coughs and sneezes, and stay at home when you are sick. See the Figure below. Protect yourself and your children from RSV. Call your healthcare professional (or 911) if you or your child is having difficulty breathing, not drinking enough fluids, or experiencing worsening symptoms.
